INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF RHETORIC
THIRTEENTH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE IN WARSAW, POLAND

July (23) 24 - 28, 2001

The Thirteenth Biennial Conference of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric will be held in Warsaw, at the Warsaw University, from Tuesday, July 24, till Saturday, July 28. Council will meet the day before, Monday, July 23. Registration will also begin Monday afternoon.

The theme of the conference will be the Rhetoric - its Theory and Practice, from classical rhetoric up to our age adaptations, including western and other traditions. References to Rhetoric and Art, Rhetoric and Theater, Rhetoric and Education, Rhetoric and Philosophy, etc. are also most welcomed.

During the Warsaw conference, we propose to focus especially on the aspect of Rhetoric of Transformation, taking into account the place of the conference, situated precisely in the region of East-Central Europe and thus especially apt to host such a debate. This debate will be open for participants from different countries and regions, which have suffered- and are still experimenting- violent political and social transformation. We would like that this particular question act as a topic not only for papers, but also for an inspiring roundtable discussion.

Proposals for 20-minute papers in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish should be submitted on the enclosed form by June 1, 2000, to the ISHR president, Prof. Jerzy Axer, Center for Studies on the Classical Tradition, Warsaw University, Nowy Swiat 69, PL 00-046 Warsaw (tel/fax. (48-22) 828-02-84, e-mail:axer@obta.uw.edu.pl).

The society will be applying for a modest conference grant to assist the travel of participants who cannot otherwise attend. Scholars who expect insufficient government or institutional support should enclose with their proposal a brief explanation of their circumstances as well as a budget proposal.

The organizers intend to inform about the acceptance of the proposals by August 2000. In September 2000 the conference program and local arrangements will be announced in the Newsletter.
